Are you the sort of person who likes Grand Theft Auto for about 30 minutes before you get so bored you never want to play it again? Then Saints Row 2 might be the game for you! I hate GTA personally, so it came as quite a surprise that I got so into this one.
In Saints Row you take on the role of...well, the protagonist from Saints Row 1 aptly dubbed 'playah' (get it?) except following a near-fatal boat explosion you are now...well, whatever you want to be. Black male with an Australian accent? Asian woman with a Mexican dialect? Mexican hermaphrodite with orange skin and a ghetto tone? You really can be any of these things. The character generator puts most RPGs and MMORPGs to shame (read: Fable 2).
You wake up after several years in a coma in a prison off the island of Stilwater, and after the breakout you're ready to retake your city. The story follows the same flow as the first installment, you earn cred to take on missions and take over other gangs and areas of the city till no one is left to oppose you.
I think where Saints Row shines most is the randomness of your missions. The storyline is not-too-serious, including stealing nuclear waste to scar a rival crime lord, and a katana battle on a burning ship, but if that gets to be too much you can always film an episode of 'COPS' for cred, or use a sewage truck to drive down property values on upscale homes.
There's so much to do it's easy to stay enthralled, and doing it all while dressed like Onechanbara or Santa Claus definitely keeps things fresh. Sure theres a lot of drug use, swearing, and the like but if you want to get in on the GTA craze or even just enjoy it on a less melodramatic chord, Saints Row might just be up your alley.
