This was a delightful little anime film I watched this weekend. And it was really delightful!
It's about a high school senior who accidentally gains the ability to leap through time. She is able to control it so that she takes a running leap, thinks of the time she wants to go to, and when she lands, she is back in time. She uses this ability to get what she wants, like doing karaoke with her friends for 10 hours, and sleeping in as much as she wants, until she starts to realize what her time travel is doing to the lives of her friends and others she knows. Before she knows it, things are getting worse and worse no matter how she tries to fix them--it's a basic "this is the consequence of time travel" theme, but with an unexpected twist concerning how she gained her ability to time-leap and who else is involved with that. It's not a very large-scale endangering-the-earth type film--everything is kept very small and human, and the film much better for it. (If Americans had tried making this film, it would have been awful!)
My favorite part is when she's first testing her time-leaping. There is some wonderful manipulation with limited space and deep space that made my heart flutter.
I recommend this film. The art is not as detailed or pretty as Miyazaki's animations, but it has a similar type of style. It has the peacefulness, humor and drama that I expect from good Japanese cinema. While it isn't very dark and only has the tiniest touch of sci-fi in it, I still liked it very much.

I haven't seen Butterfly Effect, so I don't know. But a lot of people (who have less than a brain) say that Butterfly effect is really trippy and kinda confusing, which The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is not, at all. (Of course, I don't think nonlinear films are very trippy or confusing anyway, so maybe it would be to everyone else)

Sounds interesting, I'll give it a see after (or before) I watch the sea of movie favorites suggested.

It might just be me... but the Butterfly effect wasn't confusing or trippy, it was a great movie to heckle. Memento wasn't confusing, (and yes, I saw the directed unedited version) it was just good. I look forward to seeing the Girl who leapt through time.
You got a copy i could borrow Moero?

No I don't have a copy. Not sure where you can get it, but you anime-lovers are probably more resourceful at that type of thing.
So wait, I don't get it. Are you people saying that there's some boring, straightforward version of Memento out there?

There is a version on the special edition DvDs that are edited so that it's start to finish and not the original timeline jumpy thing =P Which to me just ruin the whole point of the movie =/

Are you saying you like the boring, straightforward version of Memento? Because that is just wrong, Memento is not supposed to be boring and straightforward.

I resent that anything could be interpreted as more stupider than me.
As for a version of a movie that is supposed to be shot out-of-sequence because a character is jumping through time redone to appear in sequence...I'll admit that's a close second.

What about love being the ultimate power? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Except, no, straightforward Memento is even stupider.

Well, to get us back on topic =P
I've now seen 'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time' as well and it was in fact really good =) Moero made a good synopsis up there so all I can add is that I too recommend that you watch it =)
It was in a way similar to The Butterfly Effect. In the way that it makes time travel seem like something you shouldn't play around carelessly with. But it's less dark =P
